Cholecystectomy is one of the commonest operations performed by a general surgeon. Gall stones are very common and once they become symptomatic surgery should be considered

Gall stones can cause symptoms because of their presence in the gall bladder or because they have moved into the biliary system (drainage system of the liver). Removing the gall bladder is normally performed keyhole; but sometimes is undertaken open: normally this is for reasons of safety.
